Solana Beach Mushroom Caves

January 22, 20231 min read

Looking for an interesting and scenic hike? I have you covered! Tucked right off the 5 North freeway, near Solana Beach is a truly hidden world known as the “Mushroom Caves” to the locals or “Annie’s Canyon Trail.” The 1.6-mile trail introduces caves that were formed millions of years ago when the area was submerged underwater. As time went on, wind and erosion formed what we now see as caves. The trail was shut down recently for renovations to clean up the graffiti and trash that unfortunately had taken over but is now a beautiful and safe family destination to enjoy once again.

You will be transformed back into a prehistoric time as the outside world disappears with the depth of the canyons and as you climb and squeeze your way through the sandstone walls surrounding the crevasses. Once you reach the end of the one-way trail, you will be provided with a gorgeous view of the San Elijo lagoon and a heartwarming view of the pacific ocean.

Throughout the years people have carved foot holes in the sand walls so you are able to climb throughout the path and also helps with a good upper body workout! The passages throughout are narrow so if you have problems with claustrophobia then this might not be the trail for you. Dogs are not recommended due to the steep climbs and ladder staircase. Great for kids that enjoy climbing and are prepared for an adventure.

Where to find the Mushroom Caves:  498-450 Solana Hills Dr, Solana Beach, CA 92075. Park on the cul de sac and find your way to the sign for the trail entrance.
